Girls!
Parents of young girls are always faced with extra issues (i.e. when their menstrual cycle begins). As a single dad, with most of my children male, I have only recently had to deal with this phase of growing up. As the daughter in question is also my eldest of only two girls, it was indeed a rather emotional time for me as now daddy’s little girl is growing up.
I often hear from mums about how they handled this situation with their daughters (which I must tell you appears to be relatively easy for them as this is a normal phase of a young girl’s development and being mums, they know exactly what to do and how to handle it). After the initial shock (if you like) of being told by my now young lady of what was happening, I managed to pull myself together and asked her if she knew what was going on and why. Well, I soon learnt that she not only knew what was going on, she was completely calm and more then happy to educate me on the matter!
As my day job is nursing, part of my role is to educate my patients on various health matters and I am accustomed to sitting in on education sessions to further enhance my nursing abilities.

If only parenting came with one of these...
This was certainly the case when it came to my daughter, who completely educated me on the matter of the menstrual cycle. She informed me on what brand and type of aids to purchase, how long the cycle was expected to last and the reason why it happens.
I guess now I am the most educated father in the district on this matter and I truly value my daughter’s openness to discuss such a personal issue with me. Phew, another crisis averted.
Cheers Chris
