A Single Parent’s Dating Guide

by Nisha Sharma from Womenbrands

Are you a parent and dating?  Beware; it is sometimes a sad comedy at best.  Single parents can fall prey to the same sour and broken relationships as other singles, but they have the added complexity of caring and bringing up their children too.  So who are you in this scenario?  Here are some quick insights into the matter.

1.  Never keep your kids a secret.  If he can’t handle this he is not the right person for you.  Move on.

2.  If the date is just a date, not a serious relationship, do not introduce your kids into the situation.

3.  Schedule your dates well before time.  Kids always need one-on-one interaction, so plan your date when your children are away with their other parent, or on a play date etc.

4.  Do not date someone who isn’t comfortable with children and watch out for people who are too interested in your children.  Neither are healthy options for ongoing relationships.

5.  Never date someone who deliberately creates problems.  Between you and your children, you and your ex, your children and your ex.  No good will come of it.

6.  Do not pick anyone less emotionally healthy than you.

7.  Do not close your eyes.  Sometimes the complete package is not all it seems.

8.  You may look for potential date candidates in your every day life - at school functions, children’s play dates or activities and your place of work.

9.  If you are dating just for fun and sex, never involve your kids.  They don’t need to know everything.

Most importantly, have fun.  Dating is meant to be an enjoyable experience.  You may not find the perfect partner immediately, but you can certainly still have a good time in the interim.
