As parents, we at The Single Parent Bible feel that we have an obligation to our children, to ourselves and to the environment, to help reduce our carbon footprint. With that in mind, Saving the World will become a permanent feature and be included in each issue. Be inspired by others and keep up to date on how you too can do your bit and make a difference by introducing green living into your everyday life.

Shopping for Greens
|
First things first... Going green needs to happen in stages and gradually, so it becomes something that is natural and normal and not easily forgotten.
Step 1
The next time you or one of your family heads to the supermarket, all read and agree to the below shopping contract.
Our Family Shopping Contract
-
Our household will do only one BIG shop a week.
This will encourage us not to buy unwanted food and we will use less petrol getting to and from the supermarket.
-
Whenever possible we will choose organic foods farmed without the use of chemicals.
This is better for the Earth and is probably better for us too.
-
Whenever possible we'll buy food from local producers.
It uses up less fuel to transport this food to the supermarket.
-
We will buy fruit and vegetables in season.
We check the labels to see what country they have come from and resist stuff that has been flown half way around the world.
The above is an edited extract from the fantastic new book for kids (and grown ups), You Can Save the Planet by Jacquie Wines; published by Lothian Children's Books (ISBN: 978-0-7344-1055-9).
