Ambi Pur have recently launched a new line called 3volution.  Italian based Cristina Sala (who develops all of their fragrances) chatted to SPB about trends and how many women are using fragrance to decorate the home and create mood.

•  How does fragrance enhance moods / create atmosphere?
 
There is a strong link between scents and memories and you can create, or relive memories with the help of smells.  This is entirely unconscious.  Smell is better at this memory cue-effect than any other senses.  A smell can put you back to the place in the past where an emotional event happened.

Our olfactory sense is continuously dynamic; updating as you live and as you have new experiences.  The connection between smell and mood comes mainly from the unconscious memories the scent can arise in us.  It is a conditioned association.  For example, a mother can feel very happy every time she smells a light and sweet baby smell for her whole life because it will remind her of the happy times when she used to take care of her baby.

•  Should you have one main scent for your home or fragrance each room differently?

I definitely recommend a different scent for each room.  The reason is that each room is different.  They are used for different purposes and we feel and act differently in each of them.  For instance, I would look for a welcoming, cosy fragrance for the entrance, a refreshing one for the bathroom, a citrussy one for the kitchen, a relaxing one for the living room and a sensual one for the bedroom.  But every person should choose their favourites, following their instinct and taste.

•  What role does fragrance play in decorating the home?

Fragrance is crucial because it gives the final touch to a clean and comforting home and can be used for very different purposes.  They can be the ‘signal’ that this is our home.  For instance, when I enter my house and I perceive the nice scent of my house, I feel secure, I feel ‘at home’.

You can also use fragrances to welcome other people; such as friends, family and neighbours.  You can decorate the home at times like Christmas and the fragrance is part of the special atmosphere you try to create.
 
Finally, you can use the fragrances to state your personality, like you do with your clothes.  Indeed, with a clever combination of fragrances and decoration you can have a unique home.
