Computer game Adventures for Real
This type of training is a great way to motivate children who love their computer games. You can encourage them to train up to be tough - just like the characters in their favourite games – or to develop the skills they have, like jumping distances, sprinting or flexibility. It is a great tool to keep them focused and excited about training.
Themed training is very important when you want to use 'this' type of training. SO make sure you know what the game/TV show is roughly about before you start.
• Pick a character/game • Choose the characters/games strengths – such as super powers or abilities • Challenge the child to develop the same strengths/abilities – such as aerobic fitness for running, leg strength for sprinting. However – you won’t be able to teach them to fly... • Always encourage the child to develop flexibility too – it is really important for growing bones and joints
You can even set up a whole themed day of training in the surroundings of the game – like you are at a particular place in the game and you are training in the characters own environment.
For example:
• CHARACTER: Lara Croft – Tomb Raider • STRENGTHS: Stamina, Flexibility, Explosive strength (Sprinting) • CHALLENGE: To be able to successfully manoeuver a course (set up by you the trainer) that involves cardio, sprinting (or hiding from/behind objects) and flexibility.
The course can be set up at a local park – with different parts of the park acting as different sections of a tomb Lara has to raid. The child has to successfully complete a course of 3 laps round the oval (not necessarily in a row), climb under 5 pieces of different park equipment and sprint from tree to tree without being seen by anyone.
